Jack and the Giant

I feel that Jack deserves my sympathy because he is a filial son. All he ever wanted was for his mother to have a better life. Though it was wrong for him to trespass into the giant’s house to steal, his intentions all along were good. When he got the beans from the funny-looking man, he was told that if he “plant them overnight, by morning they grow right up to the sky." This aroused his curiosity and he agreed to exchange his cow for the beans because the man had promised him, saying that “if it doesn't turn out to be true you can have your cow back." When he stole from the giant, he was always thinking about his mother, just like when he exchanged the cows for the beans. Therefore, I feel that Jack is a filial son and deserves my sympathy.

I also sympathize with the giant because he had died innocently, without even knowing why. He was just trying to catch the thief (jack). The gold coins, the hen which lays golden eggs, and the harp could have been the giant’s source of income and in this case, he is the victim and not jack. Jack had trespassed into his house and stolen from him, and in the end, it was jack who benefited from the theft and not the giant himself. Therefore, I feel that the giant also deserves my sympathy.
